Mr Jonathan Hayter, Consultant Facial Surgeon answers some important questions about facial cosmetic injection treatments

Jonathan HayteWhat treatments are available?

There are two main types of injection treatments which improve appearance by reducing facial lines – botulinum toxin injections and tissue fillers.

Botulinum toxin injections, such as Botox, relax muscles which cause expression lines across the upper face. This treatment helps reduce frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet lines around the eyes to produce a relaxed and balanced appearance.

Tissue filler injections introduce a gel substance to improve volume around the mouth. The treatment can lift and smooth out both deep smile lines around the mouth and wrinkles across the upper lip to make them less prominent. Tissue fillers also provide a safe and predictable way to improve the shape of the lips to enhance their appearance.

How are these treatments done?

Treatments should be undertaken in a clinical room, as an outpatient procedure, with single use equipment to ensure sterility. As tissue filler injections may be uncomfortable, local anaesthetic is usually used to numb the treatment areas.

How long do these treatments last?

The muscle relaxing effect of botulinum toxin injections builds up over 2 weeks and then lasts for at least 3 months, sometimes longer with repeated treatments. The smoothing and shaping effect of tissue fillers can be seen immediately and typically last for six months.

Where can I be treated safely?

Botulinum toxin and tissue filler injections are available on prescription and you should choose a doctor with appropriate training and experience working in a clinical environment. A detailed consultation should always be carried out to assess whether these treatments are appropriate for you. What are the costs involved?

On average treatment costs £320 for botulinum toxin injections, treating all areas for harmonious relaxation, and also for popular tissue filler treatments for lips or deep smile lines.
