Midland Asian Lawyers Annual Gala Dinner Held at The Athena Raises funds for Charity
Lawyers, judges and politicians from across the country converged in Leicester on 17 October to attend the annual gala dinner of the Midlands Asian Lawyers Association.
The prestigious black tie event, now in its ninth year was attended by over 600 professionals to network and fundraise over dinner.
A number of special guests attended the event at the Athena in Leicester, including the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr John Thomas. Prominent members of the judiciary also attended. The keynote speaker this year was Nazir Afzal, CPS Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West region.
The Leicester-based association, which works to represent and advance the interests of Asian lawyers, chose to raise funds for the Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign.
The charity is run by local man Rik Basra, who himself successfully overcame leukaemia, and inspired Leicester people to get involved with his campaign to combat the illness. Rik’s charity now works to raise awareness about leukaemia and encourage people to join the Anthony Nolan register.
This year the committee will also make a special one-off donation in memory of Farah Sacranie, a solicitor who used to work in the city. Amar Mehta, Vice Chair of the Committee, said “In memory of Farah, a local lawyer who sadly passed away, we will make a donation of £1,000 in her name to the charity ‘Stand Up To Cancer’.
