Modern Mobility moves premises, continues to deliver scooter freedom to over 3,000 elderly and disabled Shopmobility members. 

Modern Mobility, an ethical mobility products business established in 1997, has been based on Fosse Shopping Park for the past 12 years. Due to difficulties with the major Primark construction work on the shopping complex, this family business has moved from its old premises next to the former British Home Stores, into a new shop within the Fosse Food Court. 

The warm and spacious new showroom can be found next to Greggs and adjacent to the ever popular Drucker's Patisserie. 

Modern Mobility continues to grow the membership of its vital Shopmobility service, indeed there are now over 3000 members. Totally funded by Julie Potter, Modern Mobility’s owner, this service provides wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking aids for hire so that visitors with walking difficulties can access the Fosse Park shops. 

Julie comments: "It fills us all with great pride to have provided the Shopmobility scheme at Leicester’s Fosse Park for over 12 years. My business donates a significant amount of profit to fund this service so that local people with walking difficulties can access the shops. Without the availability of shop-friendly mobility scooters for hire, many elderly and disabled individuals could not visit our retail park and sales would be affected across all stores. As the redevelopment continues here, it is so important to make sure shoppers are not put off by the building work and experience a visit that is pleasant and worthwhile. Our new showroom is in the Food Court and well away from the building work. 

We have Shopmobility members who have been coming to our store three times a week for several years – they totally depend on our service". 

Julie continues: "Here at Modern Mobility we provide a quality, assessment based service. Mobility scooters and wheelchairs should be specifically suited to individual needs so it is essential for people seeking this type of product that they talk to an established specialist before purchase. Only through a no-pressure conversation at our showroom or during a home visit, can potential scooter and wheelchair owners truly select the right product for their needs. At least 40% of our engineers’ time is spent on the road rescuing vulnerable people who have purchased cheap, unreliable scooters from rogue sellers. This commonly results in ownership of a faulty or inappropriate scooter, unnecessary anxiety, loss of money and ultimately compromised independence". 

Shopmobility member Mavis Pratt adds: "Julie and her team are such lovely people. Without their Shopmobility scheme I would be truly lost, I have been using this service for over seven years. It gives me the ability to shop without the worry and their scooters are perfect for carrying shopping in the front basket. This service is a real lifeline for me".
