A vibrant free house in the centre of the picturesque village of Great Bowden and is run by Kieran Thorne and his wonderful team.

It's a friendly dynamic free house that prides itself on offering something a bit different. Their team of chefs, including Jamie Allsopp (previously 'Scotts' of Mayfair) and Cosmin Bordeianu (from Nevill Arms, in Medbourne) pride themselves in creating freshly prepared, locally sourced seasonal food. All the dishes are freshly hand made on the premises which include bread, ice cream and desserts. although the team are constantly striving for new and exciting dishes, they ensure that they never forget the Red Lion Classics which are so popular. All meals are fabulously presented by courteous and friendly staff.

We were lucky to be invited to dinner recently and were not disappointed. We were shown to our table and given a menu with a mouth-watering selection to choose from.

For Starters - the homemade Bloody Mary soup was a taste sensation; with a delicious accompaniment of crusty home made bread, hearty and warming. The pan seared queen scallops on cauliflower and cardamon puree with a curried Asian Bhaji was a fantastic Eastern fusion with just the right amount of kick. Delectable soft scallops not overpowered by the gentle, yet fragrant spices.

For Mains - The classic fish pie, a combination of flakes of salmon, cod and smoked haddock were smothered in a delicious sauce topped with delectable whipped potatoes, it just melts in your mouth. A fabulous winter warmer. I tried Three little piggies, slow roasted belly of Blythburgh pork, ham hock bon-bon with slow braised pigs cheek served with a sage jus. I'm a big fan of belly of pork and no-one can produce 'crackling' like my mum, how wrong I was! The pigs cheek was sumptuous the whole dish was simply divine. The chefs certainly went to market with these three little piggies!

For Dessert - We opted for the chocolate mousse with hand made honeycomb, it was heavenly, like eating a chocolate cloud. The Sticky toffee homemade pudding was served with homemade vanilla ice cream and a caramel sauce. It was a great combination of flavours and textures and surprisingly light. It was warm, welcoming comforting yet at the same time very indulgent

Children are more than welcome at The Red Lion, and have their own designed menu. Speciality nights include Roast Chicken Tuesdays, Pop down on a Tuesday evening to enjoy a whole roast chicken, home-made lemon and sage stuffing, thyme roasted new potatoes and bread sauce. £19.95 for two, that's what I call value for money! ‘From the Grill’ evening every Wednesday includes locally reared steaks, their duo of chops, and the Red Lion Mixed Grill, not for the feint hearted! Rounding off the week it's Tapas Thursdays which includes the chef’s weekly selection of tapas served with a glass of Prosecco for £9.95 - Perfect!

The menus change regularly and you’ll always find a few new surprising specials on the board.

With specially selected beers, wines and champagne, The Red Lion is the perfect venue for a quick drink with lunch or a great night out.
