10 things you didn’t know about Leicester High School for Girls...
There is a Rugby Club. In fact Y6 girls play 9 sports in 6 locations. As a city school, we access fantastic facilities such as the running track at Saffron Lane and the Astros at Leicester University.
Y6 decorate the Christmas tree every year. Girls bring in their own bauble, and, watched by their parents, decorate the tree. It’s a lovely School tradition.
Three year olds play in the ‘Spinney’. We have a little woodland area where our youngest girls learn about nature. We’re great believers in outdoor education which starts at 3 and goes up to 18 with DofE Gold. Y7 camp out, make fires and learn to use knives safely.
The most popular A level is Chemistry, closely followed by maths and biology. We have 6 state-of-the-art laboratories. There are 20 A levels to choose from and our results are the best in Leicester.
Girls learn car maintenance. In the Sixth Form, girls follow a ‘Life after LHS’ programme, preparing them for independent living. They also learn about cooking on a budget, DIY and finances.
We have pets. We have an animal house, complete with resident Guinea Pig, Mr Buttons, and Honey, a rabbit. As part of the Y7 biology curriculum, students learn how to care for them.
Y6 dissect a fish. From Y7 girls study the three sciences separately, so we start early! We also have a Dissection Club, one of over 30 extra curricular clubs in School.
Y3 learn French. They are taught by a fully-qualified French teacher. In Y6 girls are taught Italian, followed by French and Spanish.
We are U18 County Badminton Champions, for the second year running. Our main sports are netball, tennis, athletics and badminton. But girls also enjoy dodgeball, table tennis, volleyball, rounders, Zumba, Yoga and Spinning.
We have a full-time Nurse. Nurse Abby is a source of professional support for parents and girls every day.
