Nick and Simon To Run the London Marathon In Aid Of Leicester Hospitals Charity And Red2Green

Nick Sone, a Financial Controller at Leicester’s Hospitals and Simon Pizzey, Head of Planning and Strategic Commissioning for East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG are running the London Marathon on 22 April 2018 to raise vital funds for Leicester Hospitals Charity and awareness of Red2Green.

Red2Green is a service that aims to help improve patients comfort, dignity, and wellbeing during their hospital stay. Over the past year, the Red2Green team have been working with clinical departments to minimize the amount of time patients are kept waiting within their hospital journey, through implementing Red2Green methodology.

It is a simple visual tool that is used to highlight when patients are waiting for investigations and procedures. A ‘Red’ day is when a patient receives little or no value adding acute care. A ‘Green’ day is when a patient receives value adding acute care that progresses their care towards discharge. The aim is to turn as many ‘Red’ days into ‘Green’ days as possible. There are a number of ways in which patient experience can be enhanced through charitable funds, for example purchasing games, magazines and clothes for patients.

Simon gave his reasons for wanting to take on the London Marathon this April. He said, “Following my time as a General Manager of the Medicine for the Elderly wards, I have become incredibly passionate about supporting patients to become active and ensure they are able to recover as soon as possible. I am therefore delighted to be running for such a good cause and to support the raising of money.

“I believe that this is a brilliant cause that will improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable in society. I also believe that this fundraising offers the potential to address one of the most challenging aspects of hospital admissions - inactivity and loneliness.”

Nick also shared his motivation behind taking on this challenge, “I want to do something that will really benefit patients. I’ve had an ambition for a long time to run a marathon – so what better way to do both, particularly as this will benefit patients in the same organisation in which I work, so that I can see the impact that it will have.

“I’ve been involved with Leicester Hospitals Charity for nine years and have seen the huge benefits to patients and staff it has delivered over that time. It’s definitely a Charity that I want to support as much as possible. Red2Green will make an immediate improvement to the lives of patients, particularly those who are vulnerable and lonely, and for me this makes it an appeal which is essential to be supported.”

The fundraising target that the runners would like to meet is £1,500 each.

Louise Moran, Red2Green Improvement Sister at Leicester’s Hospitals said, “We are giving Nick and Simon our full support and thank them for choosing to raise awareness and vital funds that will have a direct benefit to our patients.

“Red2Green” and “Get Moving To Get Home” encourage patients and their families to get active during their hospital stay and to wear their own clothes. By aiming to aid the patient experience at our hospitals, we hope to improve patient morale, mobility and mood, and also helping to get them home earlier.”
